Policy Fellow: Middle East and North Africa

SOLIDAR is looking for a policy fellow in the international cooperation pillar with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa who can possibly start as soon as possible for a duration of 3 – 6 months. This fellowship programme is open to students in the final phase of their Masters and recent graduates looking for an experience in a dynamic and international working environment

Within the fellowship programme, you will have an opportunity to get familiar and analyse the development and impact of EU development and external policies in the Neighborhood South (e.g. European Neighbourhood policy). This role will also allow you to discover the working environment of the NGOs and member-based network and give you an understanding of advocacy strategy on EU level.


The fellowship program is under the form of “La convention d’immersion professionnelle” registered under Belgium law. The position foresees the allowance of approximately 750 Euro.

Preference will be given to scholarship holders (University, EU or other grants).

Key tasks:

During the programme, fellows will be expected to make substantive contributions to:

  • Monitoring of EU policy impact in the Middle East and North Africa with SOLIDAR members and partners (including the creation of a scoreboard by reviewing the social protection and social rights reports);
  • Organizing events as well as visibility and advocacy activities (e.g. bilateral meetings with policymakers, conferences, roundtables);
  • Developing briefing papers and desk studies about the social situation in the EU Southern neighbouring countries;
  • Supporting team’s day-to-day tasks, especially with regards to SOLIDAR projects in the region.

Key skills and competences:

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and knowledge of Arabic is an asset;
  • Ability to write briefing papers and monitoring reports as well as news articles;
  • Proven familiarity with EU external and development policies and with the following topics: economic development models, decent work and social protection, freedom of association education, migration, tax justice and fair trade, human development and sustainable development;
  • Knowledge of EU decision-making process
  • Fast learner and capacity to work autonomously
