Master in International Relations

General information

Due to the university cooperation, students benefit from an extensive course offering of all three

universities that cover a broad range of theoretical approaches, thematic subject fields and regional

expertise.

The Master of Arts International Relations (MAIB) is one of the most competitive university programs

in Europe. Every year MAIB receives a large number of highly qualified applications for a limited

number of spots. The program has an international profile with 40% of the students having received

their master’s degree abroad. For an innovative concept, high-quality teaching and a convincing

international orientation MAIB received an award from the German Academic Exchange Service

(DAAD) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. It was also designated as one of the 10

best international master degree programs in Germany.

Programme Structure

As international relations as a subject field is subordinate to political science, political science forms

the basis of the MAIB program. “International Relations” specifically refers to that sub-field of

political science that deals with foreign policy and foreign relations, the relations between states

(international politics) and relations between societies of different states (transnational politics). This

discipline researches the creation and function of order and institutions on bilateral, regional and

global levels. Students in the Master of Arts International Relations program choose a focus either in

“global challenges” or “EU studies”. Other important topics include “international organizations and

institutions”, “international political economics”, “comparative foreign policy and regional analysis”,

“EU studies” and “peace and security studies”.
