Babeș-Bolyai University

On this webpage you can find general information about the Babeș-Bolyai University in the vibrant university city Cluj-Napoca.

“Babeș-Bolyai University has become in time an emblem of success for Cluj and for the entire country. It is a dynamic and constructive institution well integrated into society and oriented towards future, a future which it can design, prepare and build. An institution that can only be conceived within the framework that consecrated it, that of the universitas magistrorum et scholarium (“community of magistrates and disciples”), of the community of teachers and students, of the “corporation of equals” with an exclusive preoccupation for innovation and knowledge.”

Spending your exchange in Romania could be the adventure of your life. The Babes-Bolyai University in the vibrant university city Cluj-Napoca provides this opportunity for you.

The Babeș-Bolyai University is today the oldest, the largest and, in many ways, the most prestigious university in Romania. The university has around 45.000 students and 1.700 faculty staff and has a very multicultural character. This can be seen in the fact that each student can freely choose the language in which one will study (English, Hungarian, German or other international languages), and the study programs may be followed in full in the chosen language. The university, moreover, has 21 faculties and the study programmes are somewhat flexible since students can choose their own elective courses next to the compulsory ones. The university buildings are very modern with personal libraries for every faculty.

A plus is that the education costs for studying at the Babeș-Bolyai University are very low compared to other EU countries. The average tuition fee per 10 months at the University is around $3.200 - $3.400, covering all needs, for students from non-EU Member States. For students from countries within the EU, the tuition fee is the same as for Romanian students.

Students from non-EU countries have to get a visa after they are accepted to spend their semester abroad in Romania.

Language and additional requirements (such as the TOEFL test):

The Babeș-Bolyai University offers courses in English, Germam and French. For all the faculties, a B2 level of one of the three chosen language is needed and has to be prove. However, for the Faculty of Letters and Romanian as the chosen language a C1 level is needed.

In order to allow all students to study at least one foreign language, the University provides for language centres (Lingua Language Centre and Alpha Lannguage Centre) and various cultural centres (Italian, Austrian, French, Polish, American, German, Korean, the Institute for Turcology, Confucius Institute).

The university has 15 dormitories in total adding up to around 5.000 places, so housing at the Babeș-Bolyai University is limited. Most international students are placed in the “Iulia Haşdeu” Student Campus, but other dormitories are used as well. The rent is very cheap adding up to only 50 euros per month per person.

Of course, there is also the possibility to rent an apartment or a house in the city by contacting a real-estate agency. You will have to sign a contract with them in which you agree to pay a commission fee, usually 50% of the rent for 1 month. You can find a two-room flat at 200 – 250 EUR per month. It may or may not be furnished. You will have to pay separately for all utilities: water, electricity, gas, telephone, etc. A deposit representing the rent for the first three months is usually required. It will be refunded at the end of your stay, provided that you leave the flat in good condition.

You should sign a contract with the landlord and this should be registered at the Financial Administration (1, Avram Iancu Square).
