The Academic Committee is happy to present: Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation: Lecture and Open Discussion. Sadly due to the coronavirus measures we cannot hold it in person but don’t be discouraged because our online open event is just as interesting! Through Blackboard Collaborate, we are able to host a lecture and open discussion about the highly debated topic of Cultural Appropriation versus Cultural Appreciation. The event will begin with a lecture on culture appropriation from a  Caribbean perspective, given by our guest speaker Dr. Francio Guadeloupe, a researcher in the study of public anthropology and ethnography at the University of Amsterdam. Following his lecture, we will be opening a debate-like discussion with two main statements: ‘Cultural appreciation seeks to explore and understand culture in a positive light’ and ‘Cultural appropriation perpetuates negative stereotypes as the dominant group imposes their image of another culture on an oppressed group.’

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the different views on cultural appropriation and appreciation. Not only will you be able to get an insight into the Caribbean perspective from Dr. Guadeloupe, but you will also have the chance to debate opinions with fellow IRIO students.

Please make sure to sign up for this event if you want to join, so that the commitee can divide you into groups for the discussion.

Information on how to join the session will be as follows: you will all be added to the Study Association Clio page on Nestor. You will be able to find it under organizations. If you click that you will be able to join the session: Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation: Lecture and Open Discussion. If you have no longer access to Nestor but still want to join please follow this link when the event starts. We hope to see you there!
