Join us on December 3rd for the second edition of Clio's Book Club!
Note: the exact time for this event is yet to be announced.
For this Book Club edition, Dr. Nazanin Zadeh-Cummings (Assistant Professor of International Relations and Humanitarian Action) will join us to discuss the book that she recommended:
A Terrible Country by Keith Gessen.
This is what Dr. Nazanin tells us about the book:
Description of the book: Russian-born, US-raised Andrei is at a dead end. His relationship has fallen apart and his career is going nowhere. Andrei's grandmother in Moscow needs care as her dementia advances, and he needs material for a journal article in a last-ditch attempt at landing an academic job. So he packs his bags and sets off to the country of his birth. The novel is rooted in author Keith Gessen's own experiences as a Russian-American who returned to live with his grandmother, and his own expertise in Russian literature and politics.
Why she chose this book: "A Terrible Country is a novel about many things - identity, family, politics, and (somewhat unexpectedly!) academic ethics. Whether you identify with the protaganist or not, I think Keith Gessen's work can inspire good conversations about growing up, relationships, and navigating feeling like an outsider."
