The primary goal of the IRSP is to give students the opportunity to use their knowledge and skills in a practical setting. The bridge between academics and the professional world within IR can be a tough gap to close, with employers frequently seeking additional, quantifiable experience alongside your studies. Each year our research projects provide valuable CV experience, with the possibility for your work to be published in the field. By working closely with other students, Professors at the University of Groningen and a diverse range of Research Institutions, participants can burst the academic bubble through real world research experience, grow their academic network and meet potential employers.

IRSP Research Projects have the workload equivalent to 5 ECTS, with each student expected to produce one research paper either independently or in a group, subject to the research partner’s expectations.

"During my third year of IRIO, I participated in an IRSP research project. Our focus was on Moldova's strategic energy transition, examining the implementation of renewable energy sources to bolster Moldova's resilience against political challenges, such a s its reliance on Russian gas. This project gave me practical experience, insights into how research is conducted outside of academic settings, and a unique understanding of the internal operations of think tanks and similar organisations."

Magdalena Rubin, former IRSP researcher and IRIO student at the University of Groningen
